Mandarin on Saturdays

A group of pupils from Ealing schools joined us on Saturday mornings this summer to learn Mandarin and for an introduction to Chinese life and culture.  As well as having Mandarin language lessons with NHEHS staff we have:

  • handled objects which have taught us about Chinese life and history
  • made shadow puppets and created short films about how the Chinese years got their names
  • enjoyed a tai-chi lesson
  • cooked, and eaten, delicious Chinese dumplings

On the final Saturday we went to the Chinese galleries at the V&A where we wrote our own adventure stories inspired by some of the characters and artefacts we found there.  Then we headed into the V& A’s central courtyard to practise our brush painting in the sunshine before finishing the course with a special celebratory meal in a Chinese restaurant.

The Mandarin Department would like to thank all the pupils for being so enthusiastic, our own Year 11 and 12 students- Cassia, Gabby, Janvi and Lily, for helping out each week and HSBC, whose generous sponsorship made the course and various activities possible.
