We are delighted to announce that Carmen Hutchinson is the winner of this year’s GDST Creative Writing prize for girls in Year 3 and 4.
The competition is open to girls from throughout the GDST’s 26 schools and this year, the theme was ‘happiness.’
Entries were judged by distinguished author Anne Fine. Anne is the author of over 50 books for children and her awards include the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year Award (twice!).
Carmen’s story is entitled Happiness Land and you can read it below. Ann Fine said of the story ” … this is a tale set in a traditional ‘magical far-away land’ style. It is colourfully and beautifully told. It unfolds with balanced and steady pacing, has some lovely descriptive passages, and ends with a fine little flourish.”
Congratulations also go to Maya Biswas-Whittaker, whose piece A Letter to a Best Friend achieved a Special Mention in the category for Year 12 and 13 writers.
