This year, the Eco team has been working hard to eliminate plastic in school and encourage clean travel in order to try and contribute to decreasing climate change and the damage done to the environment.
Since the lockdown, the team has launched a new Eco newsletter which included many solutions for boredom in quarantine and the environmental crisis that is ongoing. One of the highlights of the newsletter was an article written by Year 10’s Selena about reforming your garden! There was also a fun DIY activity showing how to make at home reusable face masks with fun designs and patterns (rather than the single use ones) by Brianna Friere. There was also an article on a website found by Eliza called Ecosia, which is a special environmental search engine and is definitely worth checking out. Did you know Ecosia uses the ad revenue from your searches to plant trees where they are needed the most? Other tips included how to reduce food waste and recycle more and followed the positive effects of the recent pandemic on climate change as pollution levels decrease.
Earlier in the school year, the Eco team were proud to secure the TFL Stars Bronze Award for clean travel in schools and environmental awareness. They also ran a very successful anti-idling campaign, which included writing to Rupa Huq and asking for a non-parking zone at the front of the school to decrease pollution for the Junior school students in particular. The Eco team also recently presented a virtual assembly to students outlining the effects of the pandemic and keeping their spirits up!
The Eco team will continue to work online and with the students to continue to fight for the environment and spread awareness about the issues present, while also creating some fun activities of how to help the environment in quarantine.
