Eco Week 2021 at NHEHS – May 17 – 21st
By Mrs Henry & the Eco Reps
Next week is ‘ECO Week’ in the Junior and Senior school.
The Year 10, 11 and 12 Eco Leads have been busy organising the week, which is focused on caring for the environment. We’d love to see all staff and pupils join in and support the events they have planned:
Monday 17th May to Friday 21st May – Bike & Walk to School Week – supporting sustainable and active travel
All Staff & Senior School Pupils- If you walk or cycle to school any day this week, please report to reception to register and collect your prize.
Senior School Pupils – The year group who has the most participants will win a free breakfast.
Junior School Pupils – All participants will receive a sticker and the class with the best active travel superpowers will be announced in assembly the following week. The class who has the most participants will win a free breakfast.
Please help to support the environment and take part in active travel. Try and get your parents to take part by leaving the car at home and walking to work. Active travel can bring environmental, health and economic benefits – reducing our emissions lowers the amount of nitrogen dioxide and CO2 to tackle climate change and reduce global warming and extinction of some animals. There are many benefits of active travel for young people for example, 15 minutes of exercise can improve a child’s mood. Research shows that active travel makes children more alert and ready to face the school day than if they arrived in a car.
Monday 17th May – Meat-free Monday – To help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
The school canteen will be taking part and supplying only vegetarian food for lunch, including packed lunches.
Menu choices:
Thai Green Vegan Quorn Curry with Steamed Rice and vegetables
Pasta Pesto with Crispy Tempeh
Thursday 20th May – Plastic-free Day – helping to reduce the impact on our environment, and many different species worldwide.
Please swap any single-use plastic items that you may normally use for alternatives. Small changes can make a difference, instead of using a single use plastic bottle of drink, change it for a reusable bottle. If you get a hot or cold drink on the way to work, try to bring a reusable cup to the barista making your drink. Replace Clingfilm with paper wrap or beeswax wrap. Other suggestions will be on display in the Atrium.
Senior School Plastic-free Quiz
A plastic-free quiz will be emailed to the form tutors to complete with their form. The form group with the highest score will receive a prize.
We are hoping that this special designated week will raise further awareness to help the environment and especially help us to consider more sustainable methods of travel and use of resources.
