HELAU!  is the carnival or Fastnacht greeting used by people in many parts of Germany during the last 4 days before Lent.  During these days Germans, young and old, dress up  and celebrate with big street parties, parades, dancing and traditional food.

Last Saturday, Mainz, (where our own German teacher Mrs O’leary comes from),  staged the biggest Youth parade (Kindermaskenzug) in Europe, so on Monday (Rosenmontag) she invited the members of Junior School German Club to join her in a little bit of ‘madness’. They all dressed up and enjoyed traditional Kreppel-doughnuts, Pretzel and Apfelschorle- apple juice mixed with sparkling water. Of course, all mixed with a good dose of laughter and German.
