NHEHS Smashes Sport Relief Pole to Pole Target!
We took part in Sports Relief as part of the GDST’s Pole to Pole initiative from March 9-13th.
All the GDST schools were to join together to collectively cover the distance from the North to the South Pole, whatever the terrain – a mere 21, 257 km! All girls from Years 7-13 took part at NHEHS as the individual school challenge for us for the week was to complete 376 km.
Here’s how the week went:
Year 7 got us off to a brilliant start on Monday with three girls swimming an amazing combined total of 5.1 km!
On Day 2, the Year 7 and 8s participated in a variety of activities including rowing, Zumba, swimming and running, achieving a fantastic 252 km! Two-thirds of our week’s target in just one day!
Years 11, 12 and 13 got in on the act on Wednesday, adding an excellent 325 km to the total with running, walking, swimming and Zumba! The mass sixth form Zumba on Wednesday afternoon was a real treat, led by the amazing external coach Sofia!
Thursday continued in the same energetic vein with a full day of Zumba and swimming, pushing our total up by another 204 km.
On Friday, girls came to school dressed up as their sporting heroes with appearances ranging from Andy Murray and Liam Tancock to Becky Adlington to Dina Asher-Smith to Sarah Hunter! Our judge, Ms Copin had a hard task picking the winners!
The final day of the challenge on Friday kicked off with Year 9 either running or walking 3 miles or 3 km and finished with a staff swim!
The final tally for the week revealed that we had managed to complete 84 km of swimming, 48.05 km of rowing, 264.3 km of running/walking and an amazing 686.58 km of Zumba, making a total of 1,082.715 km – nearly trebling our target distance!
The icing on the cake of a fantastic week came when Oti Mabuse of Strictly Come Dancing gave NHEHS Sport a shout out for all our Sport Relief activities on BBC One on Friday night!
Well done to all girls and staff taking part!
