"We believe that being part of a community matters, it involves reaching out to volunteer, raising funds for causes we care about, and sharing our spaces to build meaningful relationships. These collaborations are mutually enriching and enable our students to create connections beyond the school gates."

Over £13,000 Raised for Charities This Academic Year!

By Mrs Johnson, Charities Co-Ordinator

As we near the end of the academic year, we’re delighted to announce that our fundraising for charities since September has reached the fantastic total of over £13,000! Charities we have helped so far are our two nominated local charities, The Log Cabin and The Harrow Club, plus charities put forward by the reps and Year groups, including The Felix Project, Women’s Aid, The Rainbow Trust, The Stephen Lawrence Trust, The Harrow Club, The Log Cabin, BEAT, Alzheimer’s Society, Safeline and Marie Curie.

Thank you for your very generous donations in continuing to support these great causes!

The Harrow Club

Another big thank you to all who supported The Harrow Club last week as part of their drive to give 500 young people an action-packed safe summer full of activities & great memories. Our Just Giving page made £1100 which will be match funded, making a total of £2,200 for this great charity! Thank you.

Refugee Week – June 14-18th

This week we are collecting  clothing for the 300 refugees who currently living in the Ealing area for Care for Calais. The items most in need are: Men’s trainers, socks, new underwear, jeans/joggers, jumpers/hoodies/jackets, shorts + mobile phones, English teaching materials & suitcases (as refugees are often moved between hostels at short notice). Please bring your items to school this week. Thank you for any donations!

Year 8 also wanted to raise awareness of Refugee Week by performing a song called “Never Give Up.”

This song was written by Porchlight service users and performed by detainees at Dover Immigration Removal Centre. One of the Porchlight group sent the detainees the message of “never give up” and detainees jammed around this theme to come up with this song. The song was transcribed by John Strange and arranged by Miss Le Brun. Form 8N performed it in assembly this week. Read more about it here.

Friendship Day

June 15th saw a wonderful initiative from Junior School and the Year 10 Charity Reps with ‘Friendship Day’ at Junior School, where girls were encouraged to bring in preloved books for a book collection for The Children’s Book Project and also take part in activities around friendship.

These included making friendship bracelets and writing letters to a ‘secret friend’ in their Year group and being extra kind to that person on the day and beyond.

We were delighted to fill over four trestle tables with books

Year 8 Amnesty Club Sponsored Walk for Amnesty Families Together Campaign

On 17th June, Millie, Freya, Dunya and Marianne walked to Richmond from school as part of the Capital Ring to fundraise and highlight the plight of refugee families who are apart. Parents are welcome to donate to their cause here or walk the route themselves in support of the group.

Dress Up Day for Safeline UK

This Friday 18th June we are encouraging girls at Senior School to dress up to raise money for Safeline UK, a specialist charity working to prevent sexual abuse and to support those affected in their recovery. Please remember to bring in your £1 donation.

Plan UK Sponsored Walk

Also on Friday, the Year 7s will be doing a sponsored walk around a local park with their ‘Big Sisters’ in Year 12, socially distanced, of course! They will be raising money for Plan UK.

Year 7 – Great Ormond Street Hospital

With just over three weeks to go to the end of term, there’s no let up in the charities activities, with Year 7 planning a lunchtime Fair next Monday 21st, where the proceeds from their sale of cakes and jewellery will go towards Great Ormond Street Hospital, their chosen Year group charity.  The total raised by Year 7 for GOSH already stands at over £1,000 and they’ll be following this up on Wednesday with a Year 7 Sports Day where they will be selling ice pops and no doubt hoping for a continuation of the hot weather!

Chestnut Lodge Care Home Pen Pals Write Back!

During lockdown some of our Year 11 and Sixth Formers sent pen pal letters to the residents of local care home, Chestnut Lodge. They were delighted to receive their replies this week! (see below).

Lumina Programme – Teachers’ Mentoring in Harrow

We heard this week that nine of our teachers have volunteered their time for this programme which starts next September. The Lumina programme, organised by Harrow School supports looked after children of all ages. The vision of the programme is to have a network of teachers to take part in this scheme so that hundreds of looked after children have extra access to devices and qualified educators who will support them in a subject/area of their choosing. As well as teaching, teachers acted as mentors, encouragers and role models to inspire the young people with whom they work, from primary school age up to the Sixth Form. Read more about it here.

The Log Cabin – Ealing Half Marathon

There is still time to sign up for our parent-staff team who will be running the EHM in September for The Log Cabin! We have over 25 parents and at least 6 members of staff signed up so far!  If you’d like more details or are keen to sign up with us, please email Miss Newman.
