The Importance of Exams & Keeping Schools Open: Mr Shoults in The Evening Standard

Mr. Shoults featured twice in The Evening Standard this week, giving his views on two hot educational topics.

On Monday in an article covering the importance of keeping schools open during the lockdown, he called for rapid testing to be available for teachers to help keep them in the classroom rather than self isolating and said that, “All students will struggle with their mental health if they are trapped away from the school community for another month, and that in itself impacts on learning.”

With the Welsh Assembly announcing this week the cancellation of exams in Wales, with grades to be based on classroom assessments, the conversation turned to GCSES and A-Levels in England. In this article, Mr. Shoults said, “One of the greatest challenges for students last summer was that they lost control of their own destiny. The decision to remove exams was presented as being generous to students, but it ended up leaving them less able to show what they could do.”
